good manga, bad manga

foo. It's a good thing I just got Aa! Megami-Sama! 5. I kind of like the "extensions" to the story, but it's moving really slowly as a result. Urd should have shown up by now! But it came along at just the right time.

Because after just all those chapters of Death Note, I desperately needed to antidote with fluffy stuff. It's not that Death Note's good - in fact it's pretty damn terrible. I want to say that it's some sort of societal commentary, against Japan's death penalty, but. wuh. that would be giving it too much credit. *scratches head* Can't put my finger on it exactly. It has - occasionally - flashes of something promising, but mostly it's really lazy plotting disguised with layers and layers of fast talking, double-crossing, and triple-guessing to make it look more clever than it really is. It's almost as if it were purposeful and the writer was doing some sort of Kira-channelling thing... no, nobody could be this bad on purpose.

Even the art, which I liked in the beginning, now lacks dynamism. Everyone looks posed, rather than being captured in a moment. *sigh* but I'm hanging on, if only to see L finally pull one step ahead and hoist that snotty little bastard Raito on his own petard.

*heh* it just occurred to me that it might actually be the writer getting back at the rich popular kid who bullied him in school. That's one elaborate revenge fantasy.
