Samurai 7 3

First, a correction - I originally thought that none of the Samurai 7 seemed to be direct parallels of the original Shichinin. I decided to take a look at the original cast list again, and it turns out that their names are the same. Most tellingly, Kikuchiyo was the not-quite-samurai played by a young Toshiro Mifune. I knew there was something special about that boy.

Anyhoo. Episode 3.

The gang collects another samurai, the street entertainer Gorobei. However, the samurai have attracted the unwelcome attention of the city's boss, Maro (a particularly unfortunate name, since I just watched Kodocha) who also happens to be the father of the foppish Ukyo, who's obsessed with making Kirara part of his harem. Assassins are dispatched. Major kung fu Matrix mojo ensues.

I have mixed feelings about the purported hero, Kanbei. After Kirara literally jumps off a cliff to convince him to join up, the first thing he does is fire Katsushirou and Kikuchiyo. Sure, Katsushirou's an untested warrior and Kikuchiyo is... well... Kikuchiyo,

but they are the two with the most passion for defending a village that neither of them has ever seen. From the website - heck, from the commercial bumpers - we know those two are both going to end up being part of the seven anyway, so Kanbei will have to change his mind at some point. Just feels contrived, somehow...
